What is mupirocin calcium nasal ointment?
MUPIROCIN CALCIUM (Bactroban® Nasal) is an antibiotic. It is used inside the nose to kill staphylococcal infection and thus prevent the spread of the infection by carriers who are working with patients at risk from infection. Generic mupirocin nasal ointment is not yet available.
What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?
They need to know if you have any of these conditions: an unusual or allergic reaction to mupirocin, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
How should I use this medicine?
Mupirocin calcium nasal ointment is only for use inside the nose. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Wash your hands before and after applying the ointment. Squeeze half the contents of a single-use tube into one nostril, then squeeze the other half into the second nostril. Close your nose by pressing on either side with your fingers, then releasing the sides. Repeat this closing and releasing several times over about one minute to spread the ointment through the nose. Do not use your medicine more often than directed. Finish the full course of medicine prescribed by your prescriber or health care professional even if you think your condition is better.
What if I miss a dose?
Apply missed doses as soon as possible after the dose was due, but do not use if it is nearly time for your next dose.
What drug(s) may interact with mupirocin calcium?
No interactions have been reported, but other nasal products applied to the nose may interact with mupirocin. Tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are using other nasal products, including non-prescription nasal products. Ask before stopping or starting any of your medicines.
