What is mupirocin calcium nasal ointment? (Back to top)
MUPIROCIN CALCIUM (Bactroban® Nasal) is an antibiotic. It is used inside the nose to kill staphylococcal infection and thus prevent the spread of the infection by carriers who are working with patients at risk from infection. Generic mupirocin nasal ointment is not yet available.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine? (Back to top)
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
•an unusual or allergic reaction to mupirocin, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

How should I use this medicine? (Back to top)
Mupirocin calcium nasal ointment is only for use inside the nose. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Wash your hands before and after applying the ointment. Squeeze half the contents of a single-use tube into one nostril, then squeeze the other half into the second nostril. Close your nose by pressing on either side with your fingers, then releasing the sides. Repeat this closing and releasing several times over about one minute to spread the ointment through the nose. Do not use your medicine more often than directed. Finish the full course of medicine prescribed by your prescriber or health care professional even if you think your condition is better.

What if I miss a dose? (Back to top)
Apply missed doses as soon as possible after the dose was due, but do not use if it is nearly time for your next dose.

What drug(s) may interact with mupirocin calcium? (Back to top)
No interactions have been reported, but other nasal products applied to the nose may interact with mupirocin. Tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are using other nasal products, including non-prescription nasal products. Ask before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What side effects may I notice from using mupirocin calcium? (Back to top)
Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
•severe irritation, burning, stinging, or pain

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
•altered taste
•cough
•headache
•skin itching
•sore throat
•stuffy or runny nose

What should I watch for while taking mupirocin calcium? (Back to top)
If your nose is severely irritated, burning or stinging from use of mupirocin calcium, stop using the ointment and contact your prescriber or health care professional.

One tube of ointment is for single use in each nostril. Throw away after use.

Do not get the ointment in your eyes; if you do, rinse out with plenty of cool tap water.

Where can I keep my medicine? (Back to top)
Keep out of the reach of children.

Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Do not refrigerate. One tube of ointment is for single use in both nostrils. Throw away after use.
